University of Sheffield students celebrate success at sports event in city

University of Sheffield students won 11 medals during a national competition in the city.

Over 6,000 students from more than 100 universities descended on Sheffield for the UK’s largest annual multi-sport event, held across seven venues.

Gold medals were awarded to Lianne Sellors in trampolining, Penny Andrews in the 60m athletics and the men’s climbing team, which haw now qualified for the European University Sports Association Championships to be held in Zagreb, Croatia, in July.

There were silver medals for Joe Swales and Jennifer Wood in the individual climbing contest, Fred Mears in trampolining, Luke Howdle for the 200m butterfly in swimming and Konstantinos Lygdas in the super heavyweight boxing final.

Bronze medals were also awarded to Lisa Brockelsby and Panayiotis Loizides for karate and to the women’s climbing team

Joe Swales said: “It’s great news that the team has qualified for the championships in Zagreb. It will no doubt give us a surge of motivation, we will train harder so we can push to do well on an international level and show what Sheffield has to offer.”
