Three arrests have been made this morning in a row over tree felling on a Sheffield street.

South Yorkshire Police said the arrests were made 'on suspicion of preventing lawful work' on Rustlings Road, Endcliffe, where tree fellers started cutting down trees at 5am.

The trio are being held in a city police station.

Residents on Rustlings Road said they woke up at 5am today to the sound of chainsaws being used to cut down trees as part of a city-wide road and pavement improvement plan.

They claim that they received no advance warning of the tree felling date and that some of their cars were towed away while residents slept.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Twelve officers have provided assistance on Rustlings Road this morning at the request of the council.

"We have a small presence to ensure the safety of local residents and contractors whilst the work is carried out.

"Three people have been arrested on suspicion of preventing lawful work under the Trade Union and Relation Act 1992."
