Members of union GMB are unhappy with a rise in disciplinary procedures and ‘severe’ sanctions for employees and have voted for industrial action.

Peter Davies, a GMB organiser in Sheffield said: “No one wants a strike but this ballot resulted in a 92.5 per cent vote in favour of action that, I believe, shows the level of our members anger at the treatment of their colleagues on the receiving end of this aggression.”

A spokesman from Veolia, who manage household waste across the city said: “Veolia have been working closely with the GMB and our employees over the past few weeks.

“We are disappointed with the GMBs earlier announcement to carry out strike action tomorrow.”

A further announcement will be issued by the company later today on the status of the collection service and any alternative arrangements.
