Victims of the Holocaust are remembered

Sheffield remembered victims of the Holocaust and other genocides in a ceremony in the Winter Garden on Monday, part of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Lord Mayor Coun Vickie Priestley said the Holocaust remains “a shadow over Europe’s past” and some families in Sheffield “still bear the scars”.

Retired teacher Sue Pearson, who came Sheffield as a child to escape the Nazis in Czechoslovakia, said: “I was one of the lucky ones brought to Sheffield and I’m proud to live in this community which rightly calls itself the City of Sanctuary.”

The Out Aloud choir sang, and candles were lit in memory of the victims of genocide.
