Victory for people power as post box returns to Sheffield community

Burncross Post Office was closed at the back end of last year despite widespread opposition and a petition with more than 1600 signatures claiming it was well used with around 1, 200 transactions being made there every week.

The post box was also taken away when the Bevan Way branch closed its doors for the final time.

Bosses at the Royal Mail and Post Office have now bowed to public pressure and agreed to re-site the post box in Bevan Way by the end of July.

And there are hopes the post office could also soon return as the mail delivery organisations revealed they are looking for a replacement site in the suburb.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “The vast majority of our branches are independently run, and we often do not own the building in which the Post Office is housed.

"This was the case with Burncross Post Office, when unfortunately the building in which the Post Office was based was withdrawn from Post Office use and demolished.

“We have been working hard to find another location locally for the Post Office, but are still looking for someone to take over the running of these services.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail was obliged to remove the postbox outside the former Post Office when the Post Office building was demolished. We will now be installing a new post box across the road in Bevan Way.”
