Mercury business development manager Peter Holmes said: “As a father myself, I know how important it is to parents who send their children off to university for the first time to have some peace of mind about their safety.

“Part of a student’s experience is spreading their wings and enjoying the legendary nightlife that Sheffield has to offer, but we wanted to do something that would show students visually how easy it is to protect themselves.

“As well as our video’s top tips, Freshers and other students have the comfort of knowing all our drivers are CRB-checked and well-trained in prioritising passenger safety.”

The three-and-a-half minute video shows Sheffield student ‘Ruby’ leaving The Leadmill after a night out with friends. In the first scenario we see Ruby leave the club on foot, heading for her student accommodation.

A minute after leaving the club, a hooded man steps out of the shadows and begins to follow her down a dark street. Just as he reaches out to grab her the footage rewinds and we see the second scenario unfold, in which Ruby leaves The Leadmill and stands in sight of the club’s security while she calls and waits for her taxi.

The car drops her off outside her accommodation and waits while she gets inside before pulling away.

The actress, whose name is Ruby Qaimkhani, revealed she took the role because the issue of student safety is one that is close to her heart.

“In the past, on nights out, I have felt unsafe getting home,” she admitted.

“If I’m being honest, there are some times I’ve been too drunk to remember getting home at all!

“I think Mercury Taxis’ message is important.”
