VIDEO: Modest Carlos Carvalhal hands credit to Sheffield Wednesday players

Boss Carlos Carvalhal refused to take any credit for the double substitution which helped prevent the Owls from slipping up at home to relegation-haunted Charlton Athletic.

With the scores level at half-time, the Owls head coach took off Sam Hutchinson and Aiden McGeady, throwing on Alex Lopez and Atdhe Nuhiu respectively.

The duo impressed as strikes by Tom Lees, Fernando Forestieri and an own goal by El-Hadji Ba ensured Wednesday secured their 11th Hillsborough league win this season.

“The subs created an impact, but it is not down to the coach,” stressed Carvalhal. “It is down to the players.

“They did exactly what we wanted and changed the tempo on the pitch.

“During the season we have evolved as a team. We have a number of ways we can play against different teams as we showed against Charlton.

“We mixed it with the substitutions. Nuhiu made a big impact and allowed Forestieri and Gary Hooper more space to play.

“Also, Sam controls the ball in the middle with short and long passes.

“Alex does more to attack the opponents’ midfield and that opens more spaces.

“It shows that we have different options and can adjust to situations during games.”

Carvalhal blamed the poor playing surface for an indifferent first-half performance.

He said: “Our pitch is not 100 per cent.

“We have a technical team and we try to manage the ball but it is more difficult when the ball jumps off the pitch.

“Sometimes we lost a bit of confidence.

“But we never lost control or organisation. We knew Charlton couldn’t press all the time and when we had more time and space we started playing very well.

“We deserved the win and the scoreline.”
