VIDEO: Motorists stuck on M1 motorway in South Yorkshire for hours while firefighters free woman from car

Motorists were stuck in queuing traffic for around two hours last night after a collision on the M1 in South Yorkshire.

Emergency services were alerted to a smash on the northbound stretch of the motorway between Junctions 32 and 33 - Thurcroft and Catcliffe - at 9.30pm.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said crews had to cut the roof off a car to release a woman trapped inside.

She said four fire engines responded to calls for help but because of traffic they had struggled to get to the crash scene.

The trapped woman escaped with minor injuries.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “At about 9.30pm last night officers were called to reports of a single vehicle collision on the M1 northbound between junction 32-33.

“A woman, believed to be in her 30s, suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision.

“The incident caused delays for approximately two hours while the collision was dealt with.”

Witnesses should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
