Four minutes after the re-start, left-back Kevin Wright, on trial from Chelsea, registered after the Terriers failed to deal with a corner.

Wright’s strike came just moments after George Hirst saw his penalty brilliantly kept out by Andy Firth after Jordan Williams had been adjudged to have tripped Tottenham trialist Charlie Hayford.

It was a day to forget for Hirst, the son of Owls legend David. The talented striker should have doubled their advantage midway through the second half but hit the post from close range.

Wednesday could have won by a greater margin had they been more ruthless in the final third.

The closest either side came to scoring in the opening 45 minutes was Ryan Croasdale’s looping header which struck the crossbar. At the other end, Joe Wildsmith denied Lewis O’Brien before Danny Kane fired wide when well-placed after a neat pull back by Jack Senior.

Fresh from being involved in the England Under-21 set-up, Wildsmith looked assured, producing a stunning save to deny substitute Jack Boyle. Will De Havilland and Brad Beatson also put in strong performances at the heart of their rearguard while Jack Stobbs showed fleeting glimpses of his ability out wide.

Wednesday will be hoping Wright’s winner is a good omen. The senior side travel to Huddersfield this weekend.
