VIDEO: Second half show pleases Carvalhal as Sheffield Wednesday beat Charlton

Carlos Carvalhal hailed the impact of his second half substitutes as Sheffield Wednesday beat Charlton 3-0 at Hillsborough.

A forgettable first half had seen Wednesday find it difficult to break down a hard-working Addicks backline, with clear chances to open the scoring at a premium.

However, after the break and lifted by a near 30,000 crowd, the Owls' biggest in the league this season, Carvalhal's side found more space, with a double half-time substitution of Atdhe Nuhiu and Alex Lopez, replacing Aiden McGeady and Sam Hutchinson respectively, proving decisive.

Tom Lees opened the scoring from a Ross Wallace corner and the advantage was doubled when Fernando Forestieri headed in from close range after Nuhiu had hit the post with his header.

And with confidence now high, the third arrived when Lopez's strike, which looked to be going wide, was deflected into his own goal by El-Hadji Ba.

"The team for moments in the first half lacked confidence but never lost control or organisation," said Carvalhal.

"We knew Charlton couldn't press all the time and when we had more time and space we started playing very well.

"We mixed it with the substitutions, (Atdhe) Nuhiu made a big impact and allowed Forestieri and Gary Hooper more space to play.

"Also, Sam (Hutchinson) controls the ball in the middle with short and long passes, Alex (Lopez) does more to attack the opponents midfield and that opens more spaces.

"When they lost energy we played better and we had a very good second half at a very good level. We deserved the win and the scoreline.

"We are the second or third best attack in the division and I am very happy about this because we promised our fans good attacking football and we are delivering it."
