David Edgar would be keen to explore the possibility of joining Sheffield United on a permanent basis after insisting that exciting times lie ahead for Nigel Adkins' side.

The centre-half, on loan from Birmingham City, is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season when his contract at St Andrews expires.

Despite acknowledging he has yet to discover whether United, who are ninth in the League One table with only two matches remaining, require his services next term, Edgar told The Star: “I’ve had a great year, personally. It’s a great group of lads and both they and the fans have been brilliant to me. All the way through.

“Whatever happens happens. Ultimately, it’s not going to be up to me. But I’ve had a great year, I’ve really enjoyed myself.”

Adkins refused to be drawn on his recruitment plans after conceding last weekend’s goalless draw with Barnsley leaves United with a mathematical rather than realisic chance of qualifying for the play-offs.

“Stranger things have happened,” he said. “But we needed the win. There are two games left and we’ve got to give everything. We’re still building and we’re still working hard.”

United are unbeaten in their previous five outings after keeping four clean sheets.

Although Edgar acknowledged their failure to mount a serious challenge for promotion represents a huge disappointment, the Canada international claimed United’s recent progress bodes well for the future.

“It’s night and day from what we were doing before,” Edgar, who moved to Bramall Lane in August, said. “If you look at the way we are playing, the way we are closing the season out, I think that should give us massive confidence going forward.

“Whoever is here or not, that’s up to the staff and the club. But if we keep playing the same way, the fans are enjoying it, we’re keeping clean sheets and playing attacking football, that should stand us in really good stead.”
