VIDEO: Sheffield Wednesday striker Joao had head '˜in the clouds' says Carvalhal

Carlos Carvalhal, the Owls head coach, hopes Lucas Joao has learned a valuable lesson after watching the Portugal international end his barren run in front of goal.

Joao bagged his first goal in two and a half months in Wednesday’s comprehensive 4-0 win over midtable Brentford.

The 22-year-old, a big-money summer signing from Nacional, had gone 13 matches without finding the back of the net following an eye-catching start to his Owls career.

In the early part of the campaign, Joao delivered a string of accomplished performances, including a fine display as a lone striker in Wednesday’s memorable cup win over Arsenal.

But Carvalhal believes the hype and attention surrounding the eight-goal forward contributed to his loss of form.

Carvalhal, who made two changes to his starting line-up, bringing in Kieran Lee and Atdhe Nuhiu, told The Star: “It’s good for Lucas’s confidence he scored.

“I’m not magic. I said we needed to manage Lucas very well and put him in the correct environment to score goals.

“I tried to put expectations down about Lucas but the environment was more strong than my words. People started to have a lot of expectations of him.

“Lucas scored against Arsenal and went to the national team. Everyone said he must play in the first 11 because he’s the best striker in the whole world.

“He’s a boy and lives a little in the clouds.

“The reality is we maybe missed Lucas for two months. We lost him for some time. It is a lesson to all of us.

“I haven’t talked about it with Lucas but I think he learned a lesson and will be more strong in the future.

“He’s working very hard again. I am very happy he has come back to us with his feet on the floor.”
