VIDEO: Southampton cup win can kick-Spark our season, says Sheffield United’s goal hero Marc McNulty

Sheffield United’s League Cup hero Marc McNulty hopes Tuesday evening’s quarter-final win over Southampton can kick-start the club’s promotion push.

McNulty scored the only goal of the game as United claimed a shock, but wholly deserved, victory over the Premier League side.

And, speaking ahead of Saturday’s return to League One action at home to Walsall, Scottish striker McNulty said: “We feel that reaching the League Cup semi-finals could do massive things for our season. Southampton are flying in the Premier League and we can only take heart from beating a team like that.

“But still, the league has to be our priority and our thoughts turned to that immediately after the game.”

McNulty was still at Livingston when United reached the last four of the FA Cup last season, and watched as good friend Stefan Scougall scored at Wembley in United’s semi-final defeat to Hull City.

“I’ve heard so much about what happened here last season,” McNulty smiled, “and obviously I missed out on all that.

“I’m good mates with a couple of the lads who were here already, though, so I watched all the games and was a bit jealous that I wasn’t there to be a part of it all.

“But it was brilliant to get that goal against Southampton - I’m a striker and I live to score goals, so it was a great feeling.

“And hopefully we can get back to Wembley - so I can play a part this time.”
