VIDEO: Tributes pour in after New Year’s Eve murder in Sheffield

This video shows the sombre scene where a man was murdered in Sheffield on New Year’s Eve.

A police cordon remains in place at Staniforth Road in Darnall while officers continue to investigate the tragic death.

Police were called to the scene at 11.23pm on New Year’s Eve - and it is believed there was an assault involving a ‘number of men’ shortly before they arrived.

The man - who has yet to be named but is understood to be in his twenties - was found unconscious in the road and despite treatment from paramedics, died shortly afterwards.

Now police have issued an appeal for information while extra patrols have been put on in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Handley, who is leading the investigation, said: “At this early stage our main focus is finding out who this man is establishing the circumstances leading to his death in the last hour of New Year’s Eve.

“We believe there were a number of men involved in an assault shortly before officers arrived at the scene where the man was found unconscious and despite treatment from paramedics sadly died a short time later.

“While I understand that incidents like this are worrying for those living locally we have increased patrols by neighbourhood officers to reassurance residents.

“The public often play a key part in any investigation and I would like to hear from anyone who saw an assault in the area of Staniforth Road last night around 11pm. I would also urge anybody who may have been involved in the altercation to contact police and provide me with their version of what took place.

“This investigation is a priority and will have all the resources you would expect to establish what took place and ensure anyone responsible for this man’s death will face the full consequences of their actions.”

Tributes have flooded in to the victim on social media.

Seema Aman posted: “Lately there has be so much going on in Sheffield. It’s like we have been jinxed. I honestly feel for all those who lost a loved one in recent circumstances. Honestly been a really bad last few months. Thoughts and prayers for the family who have lost someone so young.”

Mark Coles said: “Is Sheffield safe any more? So much happening. All these deaths - why? Maybe has some relation to policing but there feels something evil in the air. No respect or compassion on how fragile human life is. It’s so sad to read about all these deaths - what is the answer?”
