Work has begun on a new war memorial which has been paid for thanks to a veteran’s campaign.

Great-grandfather Bill Carline, aged 93, started an appeal to create the memorial to remember 19 Frecheville men who made the ulimate sacrifice during World War Two.

He had served in the RAF during the conflict.

The Frecheville community rallied round to raise more than £7,000 for the cause.

Now construction of the memorial, located at the rear of Frecheville Community Centre, is taking place every Saturday morning.

Bill said: “We are just getting the foundations in now - it’s taking a long time to get to this stage with the planning.

“Hopefully it will be complete by August 5, I’m really looking forward to seeing it completed.”
