Worrying news as parks cuts bite

Friends of Firth Park

At the monthly meeting of the Friends of Firth Park, all the members were greatly concerned at the news of our gardeners taking over Streetforce work on estates and grass verges.

We all understand that Government cuts will affect budgets in the council, but this will take us back to the 80s and 90s when parks were left to deteriorate and became rundown and no-go areas.

In the last 12 years or so great strides have been made by Friends groups and parks dept to bring the parks into some sort of order.

Our fear is that parks will be again the soft option and left with no resources with the result of again becoming derelict and areas suitable only for anti social activities.

Friends groups should not be expected to fill in the gaps of paid staff, it is neither acceptable to them or the workforce. What can be done?
