Bankers eye top spot after win

The top spot is now within sight for Sheffield University Bankers Ladies after their impressive 4-1 win over Netherwood.

Two goals from Isabel Millar to take her tally to seven so far, and one each for Kate O’Sullivan - her first for the club - and Amanda Shillitoe saw Bankers swap places with the second-placed visitors.

Christina Woods’ side included four debutants in Alice Mellar, Beth Kennedy, Olivia Frankland and Emer Murphy who all performed well, in Emer’s case so well she was named Player of the Day.

“I was very happy with the way we played and I feel the top spot is there for the taking,” said skipper Christina.

They face a trip to Canalside Terriers on Saturday.

Strange but true ... the men’s first team match at Wakefield was postponed due to their water-based pitch being water-logged!

Bowdon Seconds are the visitors to Goodwin on Saturday (2pm).

Two goals from skipper Chris Downham helped Bankers second team to a 3-2 win over bottom of the table Wakefield 2s. Dan Dunn was the other marksman. They’ll be looking for more of the same at Huddersfield Dragons on Saturday.

The Thirds and fourths won 3-2 and 2-1 respectively while the fifth team grabbed their first points of the season in style with a 4-1 success and the sixth team now top their league after a 4-0 victory.

Bankers Sevenths drew 2-2 but the Ladies second team suffered a 4-2 defeat.
