Basketball: Hatters start the season in style

Sheffield Hatters have made a winning start after holding off Team Northumbria last Saturday in the north-east.

The Hatters, who won a clean sweep of trophies last season, picked up a 73-65 victory at Sport Central in Newcastle to begin the new campaign in the best possible fashion.

Helen Naylor led the way with 27 points as Hatters turned a one point advantage at the end of the first half into a 57-47 lead heading into the final quarter.

And although Northumbria trimmed the deficit by one point over the last 10 minutes the Hatters ran out winners.

Hatters have a week off league action this weekend but will have an eye on the Huddersfield Heat and Doncaster Danum Eagles National Cup tie in West Yorkshire on Saturday.

The winners will host the Hatters in the second round on October 27.

In men’s Division Three the Sheffield Saints lost 71-69 at Birmingam Mets. On Saturday they host Leeds Carnegie second team at All Saints.

And the Sabres lost 97-56 at Northants Thunder. They’ll welcome Nottingham Hoods to the EIS on Saturday.
