SHEFFIELD Sharks and Newcastle Eagles served up a taster of what could be a compelling play-off series on Tuesday night as Sheffield finished their regular season home fixtures in style.
Led by a brilliant performance by 20-year-old guard Nick Lewis, the Sharks beat BBL Championship runners-up Newcastle 70-60.
The match, played in the English Institute of Sport’s ‘blue hall’, had its fair share of fiery moments, which should bode well for a competitive play-off tie. The first leg will take place in Newcastle on Friday, April 12 with the return back in Sheffield - again in the tight ‘blue hall’ - on Monday April 15.
The Sharks finish the regular season at Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday but can’t improve on seventh place in the league table.
There’s no doubt, though, that Sheffield are the form team of the BBL.
Eight wins from 10 matches in March, including the BBL Trophy against Leicester Riders, was enough to earn Atiba Lyons the Coach of the Month award.
And with Canadian Lewis and fellow Sheffield Hallam students Zach Gachette and Colin Sing still full of running late in the season, the Sharks will be confident of pushing Newcastle all the way over two legs.
