Basketball: Manchester Giants 79 Sharks 91 (after overtime)

The Sharks certainly know how to turn it on when it matters and they did so again last night to go joint top of the BBL Championship with Newcastle Eagles and London Lions.

On Friday they’d waited until the final quarter against Durham Wildcats before playing their best stuff as they progressed to the BBL Cup semi-finals but at Manchester Giants they were even later.

It took until overtime before they secured a 91-79 victory - shutting out their hosts in the extra period for good measure.

Sharks had battled back from a seven point deficit in the final quarter to lead by three on a Patrick Horstmann three only for David Aliu to send the match into an extra period with a triple of his own.

Horstmann was at it again in overtime as he scored five points to add to BJ Holmes’ seven as Sharks completely dominated at both ends of the floor.

Giants had led 69-62 with just over seven minutes to play before a 17-7 run by Sheffield forced Aliu to score the final three of his game high 28 points.

Earlier the Sharks looked to be well in control as they led 27-20 at the end of the first quarter and 41-35 at half time.

However, despite leading by 10 points (47-37) early in the period they allowed the Giants to dominate the third period to trail 64-59 before rediscovering their form just in time.
