Sheffield Steelers had been determined to put a stop to their festive slide tonight - but it was a task too great to achieve.

After losing three games on the bounce, they had been desperate to get back on track at Belfast Giants - the team that beat them 5-3 last night, at the Odyssey Arena.

That loss, witnessed by 5,000 fans, had been costly: it robbed Gerad Adams’ team the leadership of the Elite League.

Adams had called for more from each line as Steelers faced off this evening.

And he must have been thrilled to see them take the lead, as they had the night before. with Tyler Mosienko tipping in.

But that was neutralised a minute later at 4;26 when ex Steeler Colin Shields scored on the power play.

The away fans were in raptures though when Steelers re-took the lead, through Colton Fretter at 15;53.

Steelers seemed good value for the lead, but again, they lost it, with Craig Peacock making it 2-2 at 33;46.

And Giants went ahead at 34;29 through Darryl Lloyd.

The Steeler collapse continued with a fourth Irish goal from Ray Sawada - those three goals coming in two minutes.

But the advantage was narrowed when Jason Hewitt grabbed one back at 7 :38.

The run and gun nature of the period continued, with Peacock getting his second of the night.

If Steelers were going to get anything out of the trip to Northern Ireland, they needed a big final period.

But at 55;35 a delayed penalty goal Mike Kompon made it 6-3.

Adams will find it no consolation that his team had been in with a shout for weekend both games - at the end of the mission they were returning home without a point.
