South Yorkshire has a new boxing champion!

Jason Cunningham was crowned English bantamweight king after winning the vacant title at Doncaster Dome on Saturday night.

The Woodlands boxer went to town on Halifax’s Scott Gladwin over four rounds.

Such was the force of his punches that Gladwin had to retire on his stool.

It was a bad night for Bolsover’s ‘Ginger Rocket’ Jamie Robinson, who lost over eight rounds to unbeaten Fergus Taylor.

On Friday, at the Metrodome, Barnsley, Killamarsh’s Lee Connelly, Sheffield’s Jon Ibbotson recorded wins, as did Ben Davies, Josh Wale, Ben Wager, Lee Gibbons and Richard Thomas. Sheffield cruiser Will Burkin lost to Stoke’s Chris Nixon.
