Boxing: Painful night for Sheffield fighters

Lee Connelly’s courage wasn’t enough to stop him sliding to his fifth straight loss, last night.

In the main event, at Borough Hall, Hartlepool, County Durham, the Westfield lightweight dipped to a 60-55 points win to local boy Peter Cope.

Connelly couldn’t dictate the fight as he’d hoped to.

Now his record stands won 3 lost 11 (KO 2) drawn 1 = 15.

It is 14 months and seven fights since the brawling Unstone car mechanic has registered a win.

And it was an equally fruitless night in the north east for fellow Sheffielder Ryan Hardy.

He lost on points to welterweight Glenn Foot.

Hardy’s record now stands at 7-6-0.

*Olympic gold medallist Anthony Joshua warmed up for his step up in class against heavyweight gatekeeper Kevin Johnson later this month with an easy win in Birmingham on Saturday.

London 2012 super-heavyweight champion Joshua extended his professional record to 12-0 (12KOs) with a comfortable knockout against over-matched Brazilian Raphael Zumbano Love.

Now the 25-year-old Watford fighter turns his attention to a more testing showdown in three weeks’ time, when he gauges himself against former world title challenger Johnson at London’s O2 Arena.
