Boxing: Porter has Sheffield star Kell Brook down as the ‘little guy’

American Shawn Porter may be talking himself into trouble.

Ahead of his world title defence against Sheffield’s Kell Brook, he is publicly viewing the unbeaten South Yorkshireman as “the little guy.”

Brook is determined to strip the belt off Porter, but has not gone out of his way to bad-mouth the reigning IBF champion.

But Porter told “On August 16, that’s where he’s going to get his first loss. If I get in the ring with Kell Brook right now, I’m looking at him like he’s the little guy. I’m just going to overpower you and wear you out.”

While Porter is a muscular specimen, Brook is a big welterweight.

So talk about him being the little guy may suggest the champion is underestimating the challenger.

Porter doesn’t expect any shocks at the StubHub Center in California. “I’m faster than he is, stronger than he is, more athletic, and if you put that all in one fight, I’m going to be the winner.

“I’ve been studying a lot of tape on Brook,” he added. “They call him ‘Special K’ but I can’t figure out what’s so special about him.”

Brook will love to hear this. He believes he has never fought to his maximum potential. Yet he has got this far (mandatory contender) despite that and insists that his best form will be unleashed, after a long training camp under the scrutiny of trainer Dominic Ingle.

The Sheffield fighter and his promoter Eddie Hearn think a knockout win will usher in a new era for world boxing.

This has been rejected by Kenny Porter, father and trainer of Shawn.

“Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me” he says.

“Sounds like two guys who are trying to convince themselves of what they’re going to do. They are speaking it into existence, actually trying to create their destiny. Like I said before, we are welcoming him to the United States of America and it’s going to be a rude awakening,” the dad told
