Dennis Hobson column: Sheffield Wednesday and my new year resolutions

Sheffield Wednesday - close to my heart
Sheffield Wednesday - close to my heart

What were your New Year resolutions and did they include taking over a football club?

I was linked to Hartlepool United recently but I’d had no talks with them at all. It was a compliment though that my name was mentioned and there was a lot of press interest. If I had another day or two in the week I could probably fit a football club in! I love football and know I could pull some strings. Obviously my heart is with Sheffield Wednesday and at some stage I might get involved. I don’t have the time for a day-to-day role, but I have the contacts to make a difference to a club and get it punching above its weight. In terms of resolutions, I’d like to have another world champion next year or, at least manoeuvre somebody into a position to fight for a world title. I’d also just like to thank, at this point, Steve Winstone for his help with sponsoring our shows and helping give our kids a chance.

What can you see in the New Year for Liam Cameron?

Liam has, all of a sudden, got himself in a very powerful position because he’s just won an eliminator [British super-middle] against a very capable kid [Welsh champion – Tobias Webb]. So, on the back of a very strong performance, Liam’s given himself the platform to go on and win a British title in 2015. That’s what we’re aiming for. He’s still learning, and he’s still growing into his body, but that belief is starting to come now. He hurt his hand against Webb, but put on a quality performance that shows he can get up there with the best in the country.

And, what do you see in 2015 for Lewis Taylor?

He’s wanted to test himself for months, but had a few opponents pull out. But he did test himself at the next level against a quality opponent in [Jonson] McClumpha, and it was a great performance. Lewis looked quality and he’s going to trouble a lot of kids. They [Cameron and Taylor] are both on the right tracks and it’s exciting that I can start to manoeuvre them on to titles. I always thought they had ability, but their last performances against quality opponents proved it.

Would you like to see a new world heavyweight order in 2015?

Yes. We need a good American or British heavyweight at the top of the tree. We have got some good fighters in Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, David Price, and David Haye is coming back. There are some great domestic matches there and they’re all world class. I think we will have a world champion, one of the versions of the world title, in the next year.
