South Yorkshire promoter Dave Coldwell believes the Jamie McDonnell story represents one of the biggest ever local boxing stories.

The Doncaster scrapper competes for the IBF bantamweight title against Julio Ceja at the Keepmoat on May 11. And Coldwell says reaching that level is a lesson to all aspiring boxers.

“Jamie looked just like an average kid when he started out” the Rotherham man said. “But he really knuckled down. Under Stefy Bull and Dave Hulley he’s shown how far you can go when you put in the effort. He seems to have rocketed from area title level to world challenger!”

Coldwell says Ceja is a quality opponent but adds: “Jamie has got a great chance to pull this off.”

Coldwell hosts a show including Liam Cameron and Curtis Woodhouse on May 17 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
