New boxing career for Sheffield champ

Ryan Rhodes must have been looking forward to putting his feet up when the final bell rang on his boxing career last year.

But it’s not turned out to be quite as restful as that. In fact, the 52-fight one-time world title contender has never been busier.

The former light middleweight is head of promotions at Pow UK, specialised product suppliers in Sheffield...and is now turning his hand to training fighters.

That new career started when light welter Curtis Woodhouse asked to spend some time with him in the gym. That sent a signal through the boxing community - and super bantamweight Ross Burkinshaw was next to join his ranks. Others are on the way.

Rhodes, who has applied to the Boxing Board of Control to seek the appropriate qualifications, said he had not planned any of his new boxing duties...but was thoroughly enjoying them. “If I can pass on some of my knowledge it will be great” he said.

“Curtis will compete for titles again, at light welter rather than lightweight. While Ross Burkinshaw is a freak of nature, he’s tall with really long arms. He can do some damage.”
