This weekend sees the return of the Great British Tennis Weekend in Sheffield. It’s a nationwide campaign where tennis clubs open their doors to the public and deliver free open days and give them the chance to experience tennis.
Following closely on the back of another highly successful year in British Tennis, which included a remarkable victory in the Davis Cup, the Great British Tennis Weekend is now its fourth year and is even bigger and better than before.
Last year saw almost 2,000 events held across the country, at 1,000 venues, and over 50,000 people took part.
Events will take place at tennis clubs across the city and will provide a range of opportunities for complete beginners through to regular tennis player and are free to attend. On Saturday May 14, there will be open days at Graves TC (12-4pm), Grove TC (10am-1pm), Hillsborough Park (10am-1pm) and Fulwood TC 11am-4pm.
On Sunday, May 15, there will be open days at Abbeydale TC (11am-4pm), Ecclesall (11am-5pm), Hallamshire TC (11am-4pm), Fulwood (11am-4pm), Millhouses Park (11am-2pm) and Stocksbridge (10am-4pm).
People who are planning to attend an open day are encouraged to book in advance at www.clubspark.lta.org.uk but are welcome to turn up on the day.
Meanwhile there’s been more good news for tennis in Sheffield recently as Hillsborough Park was named as the North Regional winner of the LTA Community Venue of the Year award.
The park was a flagship venue in the groundbreaking Sheffield Parks Tennis Programme, which saw a new online court booking system and coaching programme introduced last year.
The tennis courts were also re-painted at Hillsborough Park and partnerships were formed with a range of community organisations to extend tennis to a new audience.
The venue will now go forward to the national awards in June, held at the National Tennis Centre.
Coaching sessions will be re-starting at five parks across Sheffield next week following on from last year’s successful programme.
The venues include Hillsborough, Weston, Millhouses, Concord and High Hazels.
There are a range of coaching sessions for juniors and adults, as well as family tennis sessions.
