His leap of 8.14m placed him in sixth place at the IAAF event in Portland, Oregon. It was his biggest ever indoor jump.

First place in the contest went to the American Marquis Dendy who hit the 8.26m mark, followed by the Australian Fabrice Lapierre on 8.24m.

Bramble's came as a rare success in a night of disappointment for British athletics – there were no gold medals for British athletes for the first time since 1997.

The team were without superstars Mo Farah, Greg Rutherford and Sheffield's Jess Ennis through injury, leading to a medal haul of only one silver and two bronzes.

The US, on home soil, won the entire tournament, winning exactly half of the prizes on offer.
