Barnsley sniper will get even better

Barnsley boss Danny Wilson believes striker Leroy Lita will get better with every game.

Wilson worked hard to secure the former Sheffield Wednesday loan man’s signature this summer. And Lita has repaid the faith Wilson has shown in him by scoring two goals in five games. “The more games he plays, the better he’ll be,” predicted Wilson.

“He’ll get sharper and that’s exactly what we want with Leroy. When he is sharp and he’s on the ball he’s a real goal threat.”

Lita has started all five of the games he’s played, but the 29-year-old has been substituted in the second half of all those games because he has been lacking match fitness.

Wilson has been careful to use Lita sparingly in case he picks up an injury. He said: “At this stage of the season we can’t overload players who haven’t done the workload the majority of the lads have done in pre-season. We can’t let the heart rule the head.”

Wilson has plenty of options up front with strikers Sam Winnall, Devante Cole and Kane Hemmings having all featured so far and all scored this season.

Having four hungry strikers is clearly not something which worries Wilson, it’s a selection headache he enjoys.

“We’ve got a lot of attacking options this year which is something we really lacked last season,” admitted Wilson. “We didn’t score anywhere near enough goals so we’ve signed players who can get us those goals. But all the strikers are off and running, which is good for them because it will give them confidence.”

Meanwhile, Reds’ midfielder Conor Hourihane has scooped the League One Player of the Month for August award.

The former Plymouth skipper joined the Reds in the summer and has made an immediate impact. Impressive performances in the middle of the park and three goals against Coventry City, Gillingham and Yeovil Town helped the Irishman to the accolade.

Wilson praised: “I am delighted with the impact Conor has had here. The award is thoroughly deserved.”
