The Owls, still three points back on fourth-bottom Derby County, make the trip to play that very side on Saturday knowing only a win will do if they are to remain a second-tier side.Three points guarantees to take them above the Rams by virtue of goal difference.

But in terms of survival, that win will only keep them up if South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United fail to win at Cardiff.

Rotherham will make the trip to Wales knowing a win will keep them up if Derby fail to beat Wednesday. If Derby win, they are safe.

Sheffield Wednesday have to beat Derby County on Saturday to survive.

The result set up a remarkable final day of the season for Wednesday, who slapped with a points deduction before the start of the season have spent only one week outside of the bottom three.

Celebrity fan and Reverend and The Makers frontman Jon McClure said: “Good luck Wednesday. You can do it. Champions League in five years. Believe.”

Davy Slates believes the club will need ‘passion’ to stay in the division.

He said: “Put all the home grown Sheffield lads in and we might just show enough passion to do it.

"Whatever happens the club needs to start again The German system would definitely suit Owls.”

Some fans weren’t so optimistic about The Owls’ chances, however.

Jamie Bradshaw said: “Sorry but with what I've watched this season it's so unrealistic to assume anything other than zero.

"Absolutely embarrassing being a Wednesday fan this season.”

Sheffield Wednesday will kick off against Derby County at 12.20pm this Saturday, May 8.
