Nigel Adkins will remind his players that they owe Shefield United’s supporters a performance when they begin their League One campaign in August.
Adkins will take charge of his first competitive United game at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium on August 8.
The following week, United will travel to Morecambe in the Capital One Cup before making the long trip to Peterborough a week later.
And Adkins said: “We’re mindful of the amount of travelling the fans will have to do early on in the season.
“So it’s up to us to go down there and put on a performance to reward their support, which we really appreciate. It’s important to give the fans something to be proud of.”
Adkins won’t have long to wait to experience his first local derby; United’s first home match, on August 15, is against Chesterfield.
United confirmed yesterday they the Peterborough game, on August 18, will kick off at 7.30pm instead of 7.45pm, to help away fans make the journey. United agreed to a similar change back in March, when Posh visited Bramall Lane on a Tuesday evening.
United’s home fixture against Crewe, originally scheduled for March 26, will instead be played a day earlier on Good Friday with a 3pm kick off. The change gives United an extra day of rest ahead of their Easter Monday trip to Southend.
