NEILL Collins and Harry Maguire are the best central defensive pairing in League One, Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson claimed last night.

Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s visit to Yeovil Town, Wilson paid tribute to the duo’s performances since he took charge of the South Yorkshire club in May.

“I know everyone will have their own opinion,” he said. “Different people will argue the case for their own players but, for me, I haven’t seen anything better in the competition so far.

“I think they can get better too.

“Their partnership at the back, like the season itself, is still in its infancy.

“I don’t want to tempt fate but Neill hasn’t put a foot wrong for me yet.

“Harry has been excellent too, but he’s young and there’s still plenty of room for him to improve what he’s doing.”

Collins cut an indecisive figure as United spiralled towards relegation under Wilson’s predecessor Micky Adams last term.

But the former Northern Ireland international’s arrival at Bramall Lane has coincided with a marked improvement in his displays, culminating in a near-faultless contribution against Everton in midweek.

Maguire, one of the stars of United’s march into the FA Youth Cup Fnal three months ago, has also caught the eye after being handed the responsibility of anchoring the United rearguard.

“The good thing about Harry is that he’s keen to learn and he also picks things up quickly,” Wilson added.

“He’s not the finished product but Harry, providing he continues to apply himself, has clearly got what it takes to do exceptionally well.

“The thing that impresses me most about him is his attitude. I’m sure Harry will say that Neill has helped him a lot as well. That’s what it’s all about.”
