SHEFFIELD United were reeling after a dose of Brandy but then Chris Porter was in the right place at the right time to earn a 1-1 draw.

United and Walsall entered today’s contest playing for three points and high stakes.

With the race for promotion from League One more congested than the start of the National, both teams knew even the slightest slip could prove costly when the day of reckoning arrives later this month.

Walsall, who started the match in sparkling form, are threatening to be the club which makes a late surge from the pack to snatch a top six place.

In the 22nd minute, Murphy nearly escaped the clutches of his marker but Taylor, the former United full-back, recovered well.

Three minutes later, Collins met a Robson free-kick but, spiralling through the air, could not direct the ball on target.

Chambers fired tamely over for Walsall soon after as United’s rearguard refused to be tempted out of position when the hosts worked the ball across the box.

Hill was called into action when he combined with Collins to deflect Paterson’s 36th minute shot wide after Baxendale’s centre.

Three minutes before the break Brandy should have given Walsall the lead but dragged a low shot wide of the far post after weaving his way past two markers.Sixty seconds later, however, they did take the lead with WESTCARR threading home into the bottom corner on the turn from Baxendale’s pass.

McFadzean, who came on for Robson, announced his presence by forcing Butler to bring him down a yard outside the box. With Robson off the pitch and McMahon suspended, Higginbotham took responsibility but his attempt hit the wall. No matter as PORTER, who had made his presence felt since coming on, dragged United level by bundling home.
