Julian Winter, the Sheffield United chief executive, has revealed the impeccable references which convinced Bramall Lane’s hierarchy to appoint David Weir as manager, writes James Shield.

The former Scotland, Glasgow Rangers and Everton centre-half was officially unveiled on Tuesday following three rounds of talks with the League One club.

Despite describing Weir as “the outstanding candidate” on a short-list of names which also included Robert Page, Chris Morgan and Michael Appleton, Winter confirmed United’s board of directors also asked leading figures within the game for their thoughts on the 43-year-old’s potential.

Craig Brown, Walter Smith and David Moyes are among those known to have championed his cause.

“The references we got speak for themselves,” Winter said. “We spoke to people and the answer we got was always the same.

“That David would be fantastic if you can get him. Fortunately we did.”
