DAVID McAllister is poised to join Shrewsbury Town after Sheffield United granted him permission to hold talks with Graham Turner’s side.

As The Star revealed last week, the United midfielder features at the top of their League One rivals’ wanted list following a successful spell on loan at Greenhous Meadow last term.

Speaking after Saturday’s FA Cup victory at Oxford, United manager Danny Wilson confirmed McAllister missed the third round tie to explore the possibility of a return to Shropshire.

“David needs to play first team football at this stage of his career,” Wilson said. “In fact he deserves to play regularly because he’s got a great attitude and is a smashing lad.

“Unfortunately, though, that’s not something we can guarantee him at the moment and I’ve been honest with the lad and let him know that.

“We’ll wait and see what happens now. We’ve let David speak with them and we’ll see what his decision is.”

McAllister, aged 24, has made 30 appearances for United since arriving from St Patrick’s Athletic two year’s ago.

Wilson added: “There’s an effective salary cap in operation now and we have to look at letting some people go. I fully respect and understand the reasons why.

“David is the only approach we’ve received so far.”

United, who saw new signing Jamie Murphy impress on his debut following a move from Motherwell, will visit Reading in the fourth round of the competition after goals from Tony McMahon, Dave Kitson and Nick Blackman knocked-out Chris Wilder’s side.

However, victory came at a price with defender Matt Hill being taken to hospital with suspected concussion following a first-half clash of heads.

Wilson, expressing concerns Hill could also have damaged his jaw during an accidental collision with Oxford’s Jake Wright, said: “It’s too early to say exactly what Matty has done. He was very groggy though and he was feeling his jaw.

“Matty got taken to hospital to be checked out and we’ll have to see what the results from there are.”
