Nigel Clough has revealed the club are in talks to sign a defender on loan, writes James Shield.
The Sheffield United manager, speaking ahead of today’s League One fixture against Gillingham, confirmed there is an “outside chance” the player could face Peter Taylor’s side following negotiations with his parent club.
But Clough, who could recall Chris Basham after the midfielder became a father earlier this week, said: “It’s possible we could get something done in time but, more than likely, we are looking at next week now.”
United reported no fresh injury concerns Tuesday’s Capital One Cup success over Leyton Orient.
Basham missed the third round tie after his partner gave birth on the morning of the game and Clough said: “Anyone who is a parent will realise how stressful, nervous and tiring it is, especially when it’s your first time. That goes on for weeks, if not months so we’re not just talking on the day of the birth.
“Chris has probably been carrying some of that lately which is perfectly understandable. There are other things to consider than just football.”
