Nigel Clough wants Sheffield United supporters to give Robert Page and Michael Brown the cold shoulder today in order to maxmise their own team’s chances of reaching the League One play-offs, writes James Shield.

Clough was speaking ahead of this afternoon’s fixture against at Bramall Lane which could see his squad consolidate their grip on a top six place.

Page, Clough’s managerial counterpart, spent three years at United as a player while Brown made 170 appearances for the South Yorkshire club.

“They both did very well here but, with the greatest of respect, it’s not about them,” Clough told The Star. “It’s about us and getting behind our lads.

“We won’t do a rallying cry or anything like that. Supporters will support as they see fit.

“If everyone gets behind our lads then of course we’ve got a better chance. If not, then that’s not the case.

“We spoke about how important the crowd going into some of the cup matches earlier in the season. The same is true now.”

United, who enter the match in fifth, have been criticised by some members of their following in recent weeks after drawing three and losing two of their last five games.

Clough said: “Our responsibility is to give them more. With 10 games left, it’s about putting all of that to one side. Just saying, ‘Let’s get there.’ And we can.

“Simon Grayson has had, what, two-and-a-half seasons at (second-placed) Preston. We’re trying to achieve something in our first full one here.”
