Some have moved on to the higher echelons of English football. A few have descended into football obscurity. But most still retain a place in the heart of many diehard Blades fans.
It’s the kind of argument most fans have enjoyed over the years. Kelly or Tracey in goal?
Who would partner Deane or Agana in an all-time XI? And how did Trevor Hockey maintain such impressive facial hair?
We can’t answer the latter, but we can use the expertise of The Star’s sports desk, past and present, to present a Sheffield United Hall of Fame. And we have. Here it is.
Some of these stars are undoubted Legends of the Lane; some will polarise opinion. No doubt you will flick through and wonder how a certain player ever pulled on the red and white, never mind made it onto these pages. Some won’t be the greatest players of their time; some may not have stayed for decades or be household names.
Some players, you may have to ask your parents about. But all made an impact and have gone down in Bramall Lane folklore.
We hope this eight-page pull-out will get you thinking, talking and discussing. We hope it brings back memories, hopefully good; be it the Nottingham Forest play-off semi-final of 2003, the Fourth Division promotion season or the first ever goal in the Premier League.
But most importantly, we hope it inspires you to have your say. We want to whittle this list down further, and decide the ultimate ‘Top Ten’ players to have worn the red and white stripes.
