Ryan Hall rejected a move to Rotherham in favour of joining Sheffield United, Brian McDermott has confirmed.

The Leeds manager made the admission after Hall, who is expected to make his debut for David Weir’s side against Preston North End today, arrived at Bramall Lane on loan.

McDermott, hinting that United could be offered a chance to secure the attacking midfielder’s services on a permanent basis during the January transfer window, said: “Ryan had a couple of options and could have gone to Rotherham but didn’t want to. This is the right thing for his career and the right thing for us.

“It’s difficult for Ryan to play here and he’s not 19. If he was 19 then it might be a different story. Sometimes you have to let players go to get their careers up and running.”

As The Star revealed yesterday, Weir identified Hall as a potential target after fellow winger Jamie Murphy suffered a recourrance of the hamstring complaint which has troubled him all season.

A deal, scheduled to last for a month, was brokered following talks with Elland Road’s hierarchy on Thursday evening.

“Sometimes people can go away and do really well,” McDermott said. “For me, he’s a player who plays off the strikers but we’ve got Ross (McCormack) and El-Hadji Diouf who can play there.

“You never write anybody off. But at the moment he’s blocked up and I hope he does really well.

“He didn’t come back as fit as he could have done (after the summer) but he’s training hard now and he’s made it right. David Weir wants to take him.”

Marlon King is also expected to make his first appearance for United this afternoon after being handed a short-term contract on Wednesday while Febian Brandy returns from suspension.

Jack King (foot) is North End’s only notable absentee with Chris Humphrey set to feature despite being withdrawn with cramp towards the end of last weekend’s victory over Stevenage.
