David Weir has insisted that Sheffield United’s team spirit remains as strong as ever despite their disappointing start to the new League One season, writes James Shield.
United prepared for this afternoon’s visit of Preston North End 22nd in the table and hoping to record a first win since the opening round of the campaign.
Weir, who is expected to include new signings Marlon King and Ryan Hall in the squad which entertains Simon Grayson’s side, admitted the past few weeks have been “testing,” but said: “The biggest thing is we have stuck together. We have all been disappointed with how results have gone and it is a test of character.
“The most pleasing aspect for me, though, is that we have not started pointing the finger of blame at each other.
“Obviously you have your arguments and things are said in the heat of the moment in the dressing room as they should be. But you move on and get back to work which is pleasing to me. The next stage is to get results.”
Weir added: “Life tests your character. You can either run away from it or face up to it, whatever it is.
“It’s how you handle them, how you handle disappointments, if you come back fighting or go under. I know what we want to do.”
United slipped to a fourth successive defeat in the competition when they were narrowly beaten at Carlisle seven days ago. North End, by contrast, travel east searching for their fourth consecutive win.
Weir said: “The mood is good. Obviously we are disappointed with losing and you take it badly and it hurts.
“The only answer though is to go out and start working again for the next game. Focus on that and look to put it right.
“You can only be disappointed with yourself for so long but you then have to come out fighting. And I’m a fighter.
“It’s not difficult to keep spirits high because are all in the same boat. Working to be successful and working to win football games.
“The fans have been fantastic, I know they have been frustrated with results not going as well and as quick as we would have liked.
“But they need to bear with us, believe in us and what we are doing. They will see the benefits of that shortly and then we can give them the results that they deserve.”
