Sheffield United: ‘We’re a humble club’ says Chris Wilder as he apologises to Aston Villa for PA announcement boast

Chris Wilder, the Sheffield United manager, apologised to his opposite number Steve Bruce and Aston Villa after a ‘unacceptable’ comment made over the Bramall Lane tannoy system during this afternoon’s game between the two sides.

United were in irresistable form as they tore Villa apart, eventually running out 4-1 winners with Jack O’Connell, Mark Duffy, Oli Norwood and Billy Sharp on the scoresheet before Anwar El Ghazi pulled one back for the visitors.

The Blades raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time and hit the post as well, playing some sublime football, and when the fourth official held up his board near the end of the half, announcer Gary Sinclair said on the PA system: “Unfortunately there are only two minutes of stoppage time”.

Wilder revealed afterwards he had already dealt with the issue and added: “We’re a humble club. I’m a humble manager and we’re humble players, so I’ve already sorted that out.

“That won't happen again. I apologise on behalf of Sheffield United to Steve Bruce and his staff and players… that’s not acceptable from me.

“It was a bit of over-enthusiasm and we’ve got to realise that we’ve got a long way to go. This was a good result but that’s all it is.

“A couple of clubs in the Championship talk the talk but sometimes don’t walk the walk. I just want us to be humble and the attitude that has been in the club for the last 24 months to carry on.

“I won’t allow that to get out of hand.”

Sinclair told The Star: “I didn’t say it out of arrogance - I said it out of sheer joy at witnessing the best 45 minutes of football in years.

“I didn’t want the half to end... Simple as that. No offence was ever intended.

“It was very similar to a comment I made at the last match in League One... “three minutes to the Championship.” I would never say anything to embarrass Chris or the club.”
