David Weir, the Sheffield United manager, has fired the first shot in the psychological war surrounding Saturday’s League One match against MK Dons.

United, who are understood to be exploring several leads in the transfer market ahead of next month’s deadline for permanent signings, will enter the meeting with Karl Robinson’s side hoping to respond in style following last weekend’s defeat by Bradford City.

And Weir, who despite acknowledging his team remains a work in progress refuses to make excuses for disappointing results, warned United must be prepared to win by any means necessary in order to help preserve Bramall Lane’s reputation as one of the competition’s most intimidating arenas.

“We want the feeling of winning games,” he said. “When you have that, it gives you an extra edge and not just in your own dressing room either.”

United, who could bolster their options in both midfield and attack, saw their under-21’s claim a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest yesterday courtesy of Danny Higginbotham’s late goal.

The under-18’s triumphed 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
