Smoke sees ex-Blade fired

JACOB Mellis - the Sheffield United youth footballer lured to the bright lights of Chelsea in 2007 after five years in the Bramall Lane programme - has been fired by the Premier side.

Mellis, aged 21, a one-time loanee at Barnsley, admitted setting off a smoke grenade at their training ground on March 2.

Players and staff from Chelsea’s reserve and youth teams fled with hands covering their faces because of the thick smoke.

It was the latest controversial episode to occur at the training ground.

Last February, defender Ashley Cole accidentally wounded a work-experience student with an air rifle, and, last year, a knife was discovered by cleaning staff in a dressing room.
