BARNSLEY went down 2-0 at Bristol City, who secured their Champiionship survival with Coventry, Portsmouth and Doncaster going down.

The visitors were desperate to inish the season on a high, but with no wins in their previous five games and none in their last nine on the road, prospects didn’t look promising against a City side still battling to secure their second tier status.

While the Reds’ Championship status had been secured through the week thanks to results elsewhere, the same couldn’t quite be said for Bristol City.

They remained two points shy of the Reds, but crucially still five clear of Portsmouth and Coventry with just the two games for each Championship side remaining.

Higginbotham forced a decent save from Gerken from a tight angle, while Dawson took aim from 30 yards with his shot whistling just past the post.

It was against the run of play when City went in front in the 11th minute.

Midfielder SKUSE who bagged a second goal in two games as he played a neat one-two with Stead before slotting comfortably past Button.

City boss McInnes made a tactical switch at half-time, opting to further pack the midfield by replacing former Barnsley loanee Wood with Kilkenny.

The Reds had dominated the midfield battle thus far so the change wasn’t a surprising one, unlike the decision to award the hosts a penalty kick four minutes after the restart.

Mr Deadman controversially penalised McNulty for a push on McGivern in the box, and brandished a yellow card after pointing to the spot.

The visitors were stunned, but STEAD wasn’t concerned as he coolly slotted the spot-kick past Button to make it 2-0.

There was a late switch by Hill with Noble-Lazarus and Collins coming on to hopefully provide a different cutting edge, but it was City who further dominated in the closing 10 minutes.

Stead again tested Button with a rasping angled effort, before the dismal Reds’ poor afternoon was pretty much summed up when O’Brien’s 88th minute shot was scooped embarrassingly high and wide and almost over the huge Atyeo Stand.
