Football: Title joy for Steels

Stocksbridge Park Steels celebrate winning the Blades Super Draw League CBC Premier title

Stocksbridge Park Steels clinched their first CBC Premier Championship since 1999 as goals from Mark Garrett, Mitchell Savage, Adam Todd and John McSeveney gave them a 4-0 victory over Handsworth WMC.

Bulls Head also claimed the Division Two honours after Nick Ash’s 32 goal of the season earned them a 1-1 at Niagara.

The Division One title has yet to be decided and that could happen this weekend when current leaders The Vine entertain Sunday Junior Cup winners Redmires.

If Redmires win at home against fourth-place Aston Swallownest tonight and beat The Vine at Westfield School on Sunday, the title will be theirs.

But if Redmires drop any points tonight, victory for The Vine will see them crowned champions. However, if Redmires win tonight but lose against The Vine they could still take the title if they win their other two remaining games.

Andy Birks was on target twice when Redmires beat Aston Swallownest 3-0 at the beginning of April, so they will go into the game with plenty of confidence but Aston have lost just once on their travels.

Rikki Davidson and Danny Seaman strikes saw The Vine inflict one of only two defeats that Redmires have suffered this season when the sides met at the beginning of this month.

The Vine have conceded just three goals in their last eight league games and are on a 13 game unbeaten league run.

Redmires have bounced back from that defeat though, with four league wins and victory in the Junior Cup Final. It’s certain to be close.

If Stannington Village can beat new Premier champions Stocksbridge Park Steels tonight, they will finish runners-up for the third season in a row but if they don’t win, it could go to Woodhouse West End if they win at Handsworth WMC tonight and at Hemsworth Villa on Sunday.

Niagara will take the Division Two runners-up spot if they beat Old Harrow tonight but anything other than a win for then will see it go to Fairbank-Rhodes.
