Millmoor Juniors made up for missing out on the Under-21 Division Championship by lifting the League Cup with an impressive 5-2 victory over last season’s league and cup double winners.

Junior Blades were probably slight favourites to win at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium, having taken four points off Millmoor in the league.

But they found themselves a goal down inside the opening minute as Andrew Wright headed home from a floated cross to give Millmoor the perfect start.

Tyler Harrison went close for Blades with a low angled drove that keeper Matt Skelton did well to push round the post then Millmor almost doubled their lead when Jack Mitchell in the Blades goal misjudged Liam Capes’ floated free-kick and was thankful to see the ball bounce to safety off the crossbar.

It took an excellent save from Skelton to deny Mark Fereday an equaliser on 29 minutes after the Blades striker had burst into the area.

But a minute later the Blades suffered a blow when goalkeeper Mitchell was forced off with injury leaving sub keeper Sam McLin to take over between the sticks.

The game swung Millmoor’s way in a five-minute spell just before the break.

Blades won a penalty on 41 minutes for Wright’s clumsy challenge on James Archer after Skelton had spilled a ball into the box leaving Brad Bowland to confidently convert, placing the spot kick low to the keepers left.

But Millmoor regained the lead after just two minutes. From a corner the ball was blocked on the line but Joe Osborne was on hand to slam home the rebound.

Millmoor almost grabbed a third moments later when Callum Cheetham’s curler from out on the right was superbly pushed over the bar by McLin.

But from the resulting corner Millmoor did make it 3-1 when they were awarded a penalty for holding in the area leaving Joe Osborne to thump home the spot kick high to the keeper’s right.

Millmoor surged further ahead five minutes after the restart when a cross from the left fell to Billy Smith, whose scuffed shot from just inside the box beat the keeper inside the far post.

It was all over bar the shouting on 66 minutes as Millmoor made it 5-1, Callum Cheetham squeezing the ball home from a tight angle following a scramble in the box.

Blades refused to throw in the towel, and after James Archer’s goal-bound header had been brilliantly touched onto the bar by Skelton, they pulled one back on 76 minutes.

Fereday was fouled as he burst into the area for a clear penalty which Archer converted low into the bottom corner.

Millmoor’s Joe Horsnby was sent off following a flare- up three minutes from time but it failed to spoil an entertaining and sporting final.
