Robin van Persie downed his old club Arsenal as Manchester United clambered back into the Premier League title race.

Van Persie guided home Wayne Rooney’s 27th-minute corner to inflict on Arsenal their first league defeat since the opening day.

United have now closed to within five points of Arsenal and only six points now separate the top eight in the table, with Liverpool and Southampton now Arsenal’s closest pursuers.

There was joy in the North East as both Sunderland and newcastle enjoyed shock wins.

Right back Phil Bardsley struck a 21st minute winners as Sunderland beat Manchester City 1-0 at home for the fourth successive season.

It was their third home win under Gus Poyet.

City have taken only four points from 18 on their travels.

Newcastle were 1-0 winners at Spurs thanks to Loic Remy’s 13th minute goal.
