Alan Biggs at Large: Millers legend Ronnie Moore has had some career... but will always regret saying no to Sheffield Wednesday

There’s a time and a place for most hush-hush stories and Ronnie Moore’s appointment as boss of Hartlepool United reminds of one.

It was back in 2002 during Ronnie’s iconic first spell at Rotherham United when Sheffield Wednesday came calling. I know because it was actually your correspondent here who made that call!

Anyway, cutting to the chase and putting the cloak and dagger to one side, Moore contrived to mess up that opportunity. The job was his for the taking but a stand-off over prospective terms - when the two sides were actually very close - led to him staying put. And I also happen to know he regrets not grabbing the chance to manage what would have been the biggest club of his career.

Not done badly, though, has he? Arguably the best boss in Rotherham’s history and a managerial career stretching nearly two decades. Huge challenge at Hartlepool, bottom of the pile. But a great, common sense appointment and if anyone can do it, Ronnie can.
