Owls Fans Column: It’s time Sheffield Wednesday preyed on Wolves

Wolves have been all over Wednesday for quite a while
Wolves have been all over Wednesday for quite a while

I was surprised to discover that Sheffield Wednesday haven’t beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers for eight years.

That’s not because we haven’t played them, we’ve met eight times since our last win in 2006. The Owls just don’t seem cunning enough to get a win from them.

Looking back even further the only win we’ve gained over Wolves was in the FA Cup 3rd round in 1990. This makes it two wins in 24 years.

Really thinking about our head-to-head fixtures, they have been frustrating games. In our FA Cup 4th round replay in 1995, we were leading in the penalty shootout until Andy Pearce, Chris Bart-Williams and Chris Waddle stepped up. I’m still angered by how tame Bart-Williams and Waddle’s penalties were, especially when you compare them to the conviction of Kevin Pressman’s goal.

There was also the game at Hillsborough in 2007. Wednesday were winning from the 47th minute and in our infinite wisdom decided to take the ball to the corner flag. A stalking Wolves player sneakily took the ball from two of our team and played it on for Andy Keogh to score a 90th minute equaliser.

Often the result of these matches is about the timing of the fixture. In 2008 we played Wolves at the beginning of the season where they won seven of their eight opening games. The threatening partnership of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Chris Iwelumo proved too much for our defence and we lost 4-1.

Hopefully for us this is a good time to play Wolves. The West Midlands team haven’t won in the last six games, shipping 16 goals and only scoring two. I’m feeling confident of all three points after our result at Blackburn. Let’s make it three wins in 24 years.
